marine refrigeration

As WINTER is well-known to engineer and build customized refrigeration packages and marine refrigeration is also one of the many industries, which receive and use WINTER packages successfully. Especially in this industry with limited space and power availability, the highly efficient, compact, and customized refrigeration package design is favored and appreciated by our clients. All of the WINTER packages are designed according to the international standards APIASME, PED, AD 2000, GOST, etc

Our packages are manufactured and assembled in our own WINTER workshop dedicated to marine refrigeration, which guarantees the best quality of the client’s package. WINTER closely accompanies its clients, beginning from the first contact and further through the engineering, installation, commissioning, and operation phase.

Marine Refrigeration

Marine refrigeration is a type of refrigeration system used on ships and other marine vessels to keep food, beverages, and other perishable items cold or frozen. Marine refrigeration systems can be found in a variety of applications, such as commercial fishing vessels, cargo ships, cruise ships, and yachts.

Marine refrigeration systems typically use a vapor compression cycle similar to that used in other refrigeration systems. The main components of a marine refrigeration system include:

  • Compressor: This is responsible for compressing the refrigerant gas and raising its temperature and pressure before it enters the condenser.
  • Condenser: This is a heat exchanger that removes heat from the refrigerant by condensing it back into a liquid state.
  • Evaporator: This is a heat exchanger that removes heat from the surroundings by vaporizing the refrigerant.
  • Expansion valve: This is responsible for reducing the pressure of the refrigerant and regulating its flow through the system.

Marine refrigeration systems can be powered by various energy sources, including electricity, engine waste heat, or dedicated refrigeration units. The choice of energy source can impact the operating costs and environmental impact of the system.

One of the challenges of marine refrigeration is that the system must be able to operate in a constantly changing environment, such as varying ambient temperatures and humidity levels, as well as the motion and vibrations of the vessel. This requires specialized design and engineering to ensure that the system operates reliably and safely.

WINTER offers easy maintenance and proper operation of a marine refrigeration system for ensuring safe and efficient operation, as well as maximizing its lifespan. This can include tasks such as cleaning the heat exchangers, checking refrigerant levels, and inspecting electrical components.

In addition to food and beverage storage, marine refrigeration systems can also be used for other applications on a ship, such as air conditioning, engine cooling, and medical or laboratory equipment. The specific design and configuration of the marine refrigeration system will depend on the vessel’s requirements and intended use.

  • Marine refrigeration systems may use different types of refrigerants, depending on the application and environmental considerations. For example, some refrigerants are ozone-depleting substances and are being phased out due to their environmental impact, while others are less harmful.
  • Marine refrigeration systems may also use seawater as a cooling medium, particularly in applications where the vessel is in contact with the water, such as in the case of an offshore drilling rig. Seawater cooling systems require specialized design and components to prevent corrosion and fouling.
