Evaporative Condenser / Cooling Towers
Evaporative condensers and cooling towers are two types of equipment used in the cooling of liquids and gases, such as water or air. Both use the principle of evaporation to remove heat from the liquid or gas, but they have different designs and applications.
An evaporative condenser is a device that uses a combination of air and water to cool hot gases or liquids, such as refrigerants in air conditioning systems or industrial process fluids. The hot gas or liquid is circulated through a coil that is surrounded by a flow of cool water. As the hot gas or liquid passes through the coil, it gives off heat to the water, which then flows to the top of the condenser and is sprayed over a series of baffles or plates. Air is drawn through the baffles or plates, causing the water to evaporate and the heat to be released into the atmosphere. The cooled water then returns to the bottom of the condenser to be recirculated through the coil. Evaporative condensers are commonly used in refrigeration and air conditioning systems in commercial and industrial applications.
A cooling tower is a large device used to cool water in industrial processes or in air conditioning systems for large buildings. It works by drawing in hot water from the process or air conditioning system and allowing it to flow over a large surface area within the tower. Air is then drawn through the tower by fans, causing some of the water to evaporate and the heat to be released into the atmosphere. The cooled water is then collected in a basin at the bottom of the tower and pumped back to the process or air conditioning system. Cooling towers are often used in power plants, chemical plants, and other industrial applications where large amounts of heat need to be removed from the water or other liquids.
An evaporative condenser is used to remove excess heat from a cooling system when the heat cannot be utilized for other purposes. The excess heat is removed by evaporating water.
The evaporative condenser has a cabinet with a water-sprayed condenser, and it usually has one or more fans. The excess heat is removed by evaporating water. In an evaporative condenser, the primary coolant of the cooling system is cooled, which is the opposite of a cooling tower. Evaporator condensers are more expensive than dry coolers and are primarily used in large cooling systems or systems where the outdoor temperature is high. In many locations around the world, regulations limit the physical size of a cooling system and this in turn limits the use of evaporative condensers.

In summary, while evaporative condensers and cooling towers both use evaporation to cool liquids and gases, evaporative condensers are typically used for smaller-scale applications such as refrigeration and air conditioning systems, while cooling towers are used for larger industrial processes.
